School-Based Programs
The Safe Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension Program (SATOSS) began with one school in 1998 and to date, has provided at McIntosh Middle, Booker Middle, Heron Creek Middle and Lincoln Middle School. JFCS, along with their middle school collaborative partners, provide at-risk middle school youth, whose behavior may lead toward suspension, or youth who are suspended, a place on campus where they receive a combination of mental health, substance abuse prevention education, community resource linking and academic support services through our Mentor/Tutor Program.
Mentors are trained adult role models who, as a friend, can help students develop better social skills. They are volunteers who spend time with students on a one-to-one basis. They focus on listening and providing undivided attention to the students. Statistics show that mentored students are less likely to drop out of school, use drugs or commit crimes. We are always looking for more mentors and tutors to join the program. If you are interested please call the Volunteer Coordinator at (941) 366-2224 .
JFCS also provides Masters level counseling and social services at Emma E. Booker Elementary School.
Referrals to the program are made by the school administration. Participation in the program requires a signed contact between the student, parent/guardian & school administrator.
For additional information contact the Director of Youth Services, at (941) 366-2224.
