Successful, Talented, Adults Reaching Skyward (STARS)

STARS offers adults with developmental disabilities a unique opportunity to encourage self-esteem and self-respect while learning valuable life and social skills.  This co-ed program offers a venue where individuals can make new friends and discover new interests.  Individuals have the opportunity to practice these skills in a fun, safe environment.  The program is strength based, exploring each individual’s strengths, assets, and gifts to discover what is meaningful for that person.  Each participant meets with the Program Coordinator who assists them in developing an individual plan, based on their strengths and needs.  Using this plan, each participant addresses areas of need, expanding their knowledge and their experience of themselves as capable in meeting life’s challenges, big and small.  Individuals are asked to mentor one another, using their gifts to help each other grow, learn and relate within a mentoring framework.

Operation Military Assistance Program (MAP)

Operation MAP helps actively deployed soldiers and veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as their families.  The program provides a long list of services, including financial and housing assistance, mentoring, and mental health and substance abuse counseling.  Volunteer opportunities are also available. Operation MAP is funded by a grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.

Voluntary Interim Placement Enhanced Recovery Program (VIPER)
This program, offered to residents of the Salvation Army, combines individual and family counseling to deal with substance abuse. The 10-week program helps individuals learn why they choose to abuse drugs or alcohol and appropriate treatment is recommended. Counseling is provided to VIPER participants and their family members so they understand the effects drug abuse can have on the household and reunify family members.

YMCA/JFCS Child Abuse Prevention and Mental Health Services
The Safe Children Coalition (SCC) works to support abused and neglected children and their families toward reaching permanency in a safe and stable home. JFCS provides counseling to children and their families to attain this goal. Services include: working with individuals, families and couples involved with the Safe Children Coalition, pre and post adoption counseling, anger management and parenting groups.
